What Is a Property Registration Number?
Understanding the property registration number and knowing why it exists, as well as how it differs from the RGI, registration, and annotation, is essential to real estate law.

Registration, RGI, record, annotation — what each term really means
These are words that everyone uses but almost no one explains properly. Let's get right to the point:
- Property Registration: the property's "ID" — a unique identification number established in 1973. Every property sold after that date has one.
- Registration: when something changes the title to the property (sale, mortgage) and this is recorded in the property registry.
- Registration: when a characteristic of the property or the owner changes, without altering the ownership right itself (e.g., change in marital status, new construction).
- RGI: the system/institution that stores all this information—it is not synonymous with enrollment, even though people use the terms interchangeably in everyday conversation.
Why Does This Matter?
The transfer of ownership is not truly complete until the title is registered —a signed contract alone is not enough.
